Every recommendation on this site is a specification comparison. This page states exactly what that means, what it is based on, and what it cannot tell you — so you can decide how much weight to give it.
The short version
We do not carry out product trials. Portable Scout compares portable power stations and solar generators products on the specifications their manufacturers publish, plus the aggregate customer rating and rating count on the retail listing. That is a genuine and useful basis for a shortlist. It is not the same as someone using the product, and we will not pretend otherwise.

What each recommendation is built from
- Manufacturer-published specifications, recorded from the product's retail listing — dimensions, capacity, materials, power, rated performance, warranty and whatever else the maker states.
- Aggregate customer feedback — the overall rating and the number of ratings at the time the page was last updated. Volume matters as much as the score: a 4.7 from 60 buyers is a weaker signal than a 4.4 from 9,000.
- Stated standards conformance. Where a manufacturer claims a product meets a published standard, we name the standard rather than repeating the claim, so it can be checked.
How a shortlist is narrowed
Candidates start as the products currently listed in the category. They are narrowed on published specification differences that matter for the specific use case named in the page title — a shortlist for travel is not a shortlist for a workshop, even in the same category.
Commission does not affect the order. The rate is effectively identical across the products we link, so there is nothing to gain by ranking one above another.

What we re-check, and how often
Availability and every outbound product link are re-verified automatically twice a day. When a product is delisted or goes out of stock, the entry is marked or removed rather than left in place. Specification snapshots are re-recorded when a listing changes.
The limits of this method — read this part
- Nobody writing for this site has physically handled the products listed. We receive no review units.
- Published specifications are supplied by the manufacturer. We report them; we cannot independently confirm them.
- Customer ratings are other buyers' reports, with all the selection bias that carries.
- Anything that depends on handling a product — how a fabric wears, how a motor sounds after a year — is outside what this method can establish. Where that is the deciding factor, use this page for the shortlist and go find someone who has used the thing.
